Why we like it

This creative, collaborative process gets participants talking about their team, values, and experiences.

Process

1. Show an example coat of arms from history or an example from previous teams.
2. Put teams in breakout rooms with their task and instructions.
3. Teams draw their own symbols using a collaborative whiteboard or sketchpad, or source images or symbols online to create their coat of arms.
4. Teams report back to the main room to explain their coat of arms’ meanings.

Daisy chain options

a) Ask other teams to interpret the coat of arms before the original team’s explanation.
b) Have teams create a team name and use them and the coat of arms in future activities, on collaborative whiteboards to mark ownership, etc.

Variations

a) Ask participants to bring their own photos to the groups. For example, photos of a personal item or prized possession that makes up their personal identity.
b) This activity can be run by individuals online or offline for sharing their personal coat of arms.
c) Teams can share their coat of arms world cafe style in rotating breakout rooms.
