TV Time
Description
Sharing video or audio with the full session and pausing for commentary, questions, and debriefs.
Why we like it
Instead of participants viewing clips on their own (which can lead to lost time as people access and play clips), the host uses Zoom’s sharing functions to let participants watch and discuss in the main room.
Process
This process focuses on Zoom platform features and can be replicated in any virtual platform that allows audiovisual sharing.
1. Give instructions and introduction to the video file (or audio file). What should participants look for or what questions should they be ready to answer?
2. Host simply plays the specific clips using Zoom’s screen sharing options. Host can choose which specific app or window to share (as opposed to sharing the entire desktop view).
3. During pauses or after each clip, participants discuss, answer questions, and/or debrief.
Daisy chain options
A. Zoom security settings can allow participants to share their screens, so allowing others to share personal clips (such as personal presentation videos) for feedback or commentary opens many opportunities.
B. 3rd party whiteboards such as Miro and Mural allow video embedding. If you’re using a platform that doesn’t allow direct audiovisual sharing, you can embed the video in a white board. Of course, you could just share the video URL if it was already hosted online (ex. Youtube).
C. By posting a video on a 3rd party whiteboard, it allows three key functions:
i) Allows participants to watch the video directly without leaving the whiteboard.
ii) Allows facilitator to monitor participant cursors on the whiteboard (having them sign into a personal account will also show their names.
iii) Most importantly, allows other activities, comments, sticky notes, and collaborations on the same white board. For example, participants can watch the video, pause when needed, and type ideas in areas directly next to the video.
Tech Tips
1. Zoom’s meeting settings and share screen options allow you to choose whether or not you want to share your computer’s audio.
2. Individual meeting settings allow participants to choose whether full screen mode takes over their monitor when someone else shares a screen, or in this case, a video. NOT allowing full screen mode allows other apps (like Miro) to be on the screen at the same time.
3. Some video apps may not work properly with Zoom’s screen sharing functions. For example, some apps may play audio through Zoom for the host but not for participants. Do a check before a session or have a couple of apps ready to go.
4. The sound should play from your computer’s apps through Zoom to the participants directly for clear audio quality. Do not try to play sound from your computer speaker back into your computer’s microphone and then through Zoom to the participants. This will sound awful and may also create an echo effect or high-pitched feedback.
