Engagement Basics

  • Art of the ask: Start by asking a question, not uttering your opinion. Weigh in last as a leader. Balance leading and following.

  • Psych Safety: Help quiet people speak up (and don’t let the talkers dominate). Democratize participation. Mute before you refute. Remember SCARF impact.

  • Common ground: Acknowledge and build on what others say. Focus on empathy and explore what others share. Plus before pivots: Add a “plus” to others’ ideas.

Please discuss with your partners:

  • Milestones, practical steps?

  • Obstacles, and how can we remove them?

  • Motivating nudge: what will get us moving on this?
